To make Tennessee Onions, first cut large onions into rounds. Arrange the onion slices in a baking dish. Sprinkle grated cheddar cheese, Parmesan cheese, and mozzarella cheese on top.

Ingredients
  

  • Cooking spray = As needed
  • Sweet onions sliced into 1/4-in. rings = 2½ lbs. (about 3 large onions)
  • Dried thyme = 1 tsp.
  • Dried parsley flakes = 1 tsp.
  • Garlic salt = 1 tsp.
  • Dried oregano = 1/2 tsp.
  • Dry mustard = 1/2 tsp.
  • Cayenne pepper = 1/4 tsp.
  • Salted butter cut into 1/4-in. pieces = 1/4 cup
  • Mild Cheddar cheese shredded = 4 oz. (about 1 cup)
  • Smoked Gouda cheese shredded = 4 oz. (about 1 cup)

Instructions
 

  • Step 1
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. Coat a baking dish.
  • Step 2
  • Place onion rings in a large bowl.
  • Step 3
  • Sprinkle thyme, parsley, garlic salt, oregano, mustard, and cayenne.

  • Toss onions gently until well-coated with spices.
  • Step 5
  • Spread the seasoned onions evenly in the baking dish.
  • Step 6
  • Place butter slices evenly on top of the onions.
  • Step 7
  • Sprinkle Cheddar and Gouda cheese over the onions.

  • Cover the dish with aluminum foil.
  • Step 9
  • Bake for 40 minutes until onions are soft.
  • Step 10
  • Remove the foil. Bake for 30 more minutes.
  • Step 11
  • Cook until the top is golden and bubbly.
