Equipment

  • Large Dutch Oven
  • Wooden Spoon
  • Chef's knife.
  • Cutting Board
  • Measuring Spoons
  • Can opener

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs Ground Beef
  • 1 large Yellow Onion
  • 3 cloves Garlic
  • 3 tbsp Chili Powder
  • 1 tsp Ground Cumin
  • 1 tsp Dried Oregano
  • 28 oz Canned Tomatoes
  • 15 oz Kidney Beans
  • 1 cup Beef Broth
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Black Pepper

Instructions

1. Brown the Meat

  • Place your large pot over medium heat. Add the ground beef to the hot pot. Cook it until it is no longer pink. Use your spoon to break it up. Drain any extra fat from the pot now.

2. Sauté the Vegetables

  • Add the chopped onions to the beef. Cook them until they look soft and clear. Stir in the minced garlic for one minute. Do not let the garlic turn brown.

3. Add the Spices

  • Sprinkle the chili powder and cumin over meat. Add the dried oregano and a little salt. Stir well to coat the beef in spices. This wakes up the dried spice flavors.

4. Pour in Liquids

  • Add the crushed tomatoes and the beef broth. Stir everything together until it is well mixed. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil first. Then turn the heat down to low.

5. Simmer the Chili

  • Cover the pot with a heavy lid. Let it simmer for about thirty minutes. This helps all the flavors blend together well. The sauce will start to thicken up beautifully.

6. Add the Beans

  • Rinse the kidney beans in cold water first. Stir them into the pot of hot chili. Let it cook for ten more minutes. This warms the beans all the way through.

7. Season and Serve

  • Taste the chili one last time for salt. Add pepper if you like a little heat. Ladle the hot chili into deep soup bowls. Add your favorite toppings and enjoy immediately!

Notes

➔ Use high quality ground beef for the best flavor.
➔ Sauté the spices with the meat to release oils.
➔ Do not skip draining the fat from the beef.
➔ Let the chili sit for ten minutes before serving.
➔ Add a pinch of sugar to balance tomato acid.
➔ Use fresh garlic instead of the jarred kind today.
➔ Simmer on low heat so the meat stays tender.
