Equipment

  • Baking Dish
  • Large Mixing Bowl
  • Sharp knife
  • Peeler
  • Saucepan
  • Wooden Spoon

Ingredients

  • 1.5 kg COOKING APPLES
  • 150 grams ALL-PURPOSE FLOUR
  • 75 grams UNSALTED BUTTER
  • 50 grams DEMERARA SUGAR
  • 50 grams CASTER SUGAR
  • 1 tsp GROUND CINNAMON

Instructions

  • Preheat your kitchen oven to 180°C before you begin. Peel and core your fresh cooking apples very carefully. Chop the fruit into chunk sizes using your sharp knife.
  • Place your apple chunks into the medium saucepan gently. Add the caster sugar and a tiny splash of water. Cook on medium heat for five minutes to soften them.
  • Spoon the softened apples into your clean baking dish. Sprinkle the ground cinnamon over the fruit layer evenly. Spread the mixture out so it looks flat.
  • Place your all-purpose flour into the large mixing bowl. Add the cold cubed unsalted butter into the flour. Rub them together using your clean fingertips gently.
  • Stop rubbing when the mixture looks like fine breadcrumbs. Stir in your crunchy demerara sugar with a spoon. This step ensures a wonderfully crispy texture.
  • Sprinkle the sweet crumble mix over your apples evenly. Do not press the topping down into the fruit. Keep it loose so it stays light and crunchy.
  • Place the dish inside your hot oven right away. Bake for thirty minutes until the top turns golden. The fruit sauce should bubble up around the edges.

Notes

  • Use cold butter to get the best crumbly topping texture.
  • Do not chop your apples too small or they turn mushy.
  • Mix Bramley apples with sweet eating apples for great flavor depth.
  • Let the baked crumble cool slightly before serving it out.
  • Add a handful of oats for extra topping crunchiness.
  • Leave the crumble loose on top to ensure maximum crispiness.
  • Keep checking the oven so the sugar does not burn.
  • Use fresh spices to get a lovely warm dessert aroma.
  • Toss apples in lemon juice to stop them turning brown.
  • Rub the flour and butter gently to keep it light.
