Equipment

  • Digital scale
  • Stainless steel pot
  • Stick blender
  • Soap mold
  • Silicone molds
  • Thermometer
  • Safety gloves and goggles
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Paper towels
  • Wooden Spoon

Ingredients

  • Coconut oil - 2 cups helps soap get hard
  • Olive oil - 1 cup makes soap gentle
  • Lye - 1/2 cup turns oils into soap
  • Distilled water - 3/4 cup mixes with lye
  • Fine sea salt - 1/2 cup adds minerals
  • Essential oils - 2 tablespoons adds nice smell

Instructions

  • Put on your gloves and goggles now.
  • Lye can burn your skin very badly.
  • Work in a well-ventilated room always.
  • Keep kids and pets away from workspace.
  • Open windows if you have them nearby.
  • Pour water into a heat-safe container.
  • Slowly add lye to the water carefully.
  • Never pour water into lye instead.
  • It will bubble and heat up fast.
  • Stir gently until lye dissolves completely.
  • Let this mixture cool down to 100°F.
  • This takes about 30 minutes usually.
  • Combine coconut oil and olive oil together.
  • Heat them in your stainless steel pot.
  • Warm until coconut oil melts fully.
  • Let oils cool to 100°F too.
  • Both mixtures should match in temperature.
  • Pour lye mixture into the melted oils.
  • Use your stick blender right away.
  • Blend for 30 seconds, then stir manually.
  • Repeat this process several more times.
  • The mixture will get thick like pudding.
  • This is called "trace" in soap making.
  • Quickly stir in your fine sea salt.
  • Add essential oils at this same time.
  • Mix everything together really well now.
  • Work fast because soap hardens quickly.
  • Pour soap mixture into your prepared molds.
  • Tap molds gently on the counter top.
  • This removes any trapped air bubbles inside.
  • Smooth the top with a spatula.
  • Leave soap in molds for 48 hours.
  • Don't touch or move them around.
  • The soap needs time to harden properly.
  • After two days, remove from the molds.
  • Cut soap into bars if needed now.
  • Place bars on a drying rack.
  • Let them cure for 4-6 weeks total.
  • This makes soap last much longer.
  • It also makes the soap gentler too.

Notes

  • Use fine sea salt, not coarse grains.
  • Coarse salt makes soap scratchy and rough.
  • Work quickly once you add the salt.
  • Sea salt speeds up the hardening process.
  • Don't use too much sea salt overall.
  • It can make soap crumbly and weak.
  • Test your essential oils on skin first.
  • Some people have allergic reactions to them.
  • Label your soaps with the making date.
  • This helps you track curing time easily.
  • Store extra soap in a cool place.
  • Heat can make soap sweat or melt.
