Equipment

  • Large Stockpot
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Small Sauté Pan
  • Baking Dish
  • Sharp knife
  • Tongs
  • Aluminum foil

Ingredients

  • 1 large head Green Cabbage
  • 1 lb Ground Beef
  • 1.5 cups Cooked White Rice
  • 1 large Yellow Onion
  • 2 cloves Garlic
  • 28 oz Canned Tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp Brown Sugar
  • 1 tbsp Lemon Juice
  • 1 large Egg
  • 1 tsp Thyme
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 0.5 tsp Black Pepper

Instructions

1. Prepare the Cabbage Leaves

  • Remove the core from the cabbage head. Place the head in boiling water. Peel off leaves as they get soft. Pat them dry with a clean towel.

2. Make the Filling

  • Mix the beef, rice, and egg together. Add cooked onions and spices to the bowl. Stir everything until it is well combined.

3. Stuff the Leaves

  • Lay one leaf flat on your counter. Place a spoonful of meat in the center. Fold the sides inward over the meat. Roll it up tightly like a small burrito.

4. Prepare the Sauce

  • Mix tomatoes, sugar, and lemon juice. Pour a little sauce into the baking dish. This prevents the rolls from sticking.

5. Layer and Bake

  • Place the rolls in the dish. Pour the remaining sauce over the top. Cover the dish tightly with foil. Bake until the meat is fully cooked.

Notes

➡️ Use lean ground beef for a cleaner taste.
➡️ Soak the leaves long enough to prevent tearing.
➡️ Do not overfill the leaves or they will burst.
➡️ Let the rolls rest before serving for better flavor.
➡️ Add extra garlic if you love a bold taste.
➡️ Tightly pack the rolls in the baking dish.
