Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pounds of ground beef 90 percent lean.
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil for the hot pan.
  • 1 medium yellow onion diced very small.
  • 1 green bell pepper seeded and chopped now.
  • 2 cloves of garlic minced very finely today.
  • 1 cup of tomato ketchup for a sweet base.
  • 1/4 cup of water to thin the heavy sauce.
  • 1 tablespoon of brown sugar for the sweetness.
  • 1 teaspoon of yellow mustard for a sharp tang.
  • 1/2 teaspoon of chili powder for a tiny kick.
  • 1/2 teaspoon of kosher salt to season well.
  • 6 soft hamburger buns split and toasted.

Instructions

Brown the Ground Beef

  • Heat the oil in your large skillet over a high heat. Add the beef and cook until it is grey and crumbly.

Drain the Extra Fat

  • Tilt the pan and scoop out the oily liquid with a spoon. This keeps the meat very healthy and dry today.

Sauté the Fresh Vegetables

  • Add the diced onion and green pepper to the meat. Cook for five minutes until the vegetables are very soft.

Add the Minced Garlic

  • Stir in the garlic and cook for one minute. Do not let the garlic turn brown or it will taste bitter.

Whisk the Red Sauce

  • In a small bowl, mix the ketchup, water, and brown sugar. Add the mustard and chili powder and stir well.

Simmer the Meat Filling

  • Pour the red liquid over the beef and vegetables. Turn the heat down and let the sauce bubble for ten minutes.

Toast the Soft Buns

  • Butter the inside of your hamburger buns. Place them in a hot pan until they are very golden and crunchy.

Assemble and Serve Hot

  • Spoon a large portion of meat onto every bottom bun. Close the sandwich and serve while the beef is very warm today.

Notes

  • Use lean beef so the sauce does not get too oily.
  • Dice the peppers very small so they blend with the meat today.
  • Toast the buns well so they do not get soggy from the sauce.
  • Add a splash of Worcestershire sauce for a much deeper flavor.
  • Let the sauce simmer until it is very thick and sticky.
  • Use a red bell pepper if you want a much sweeter taste.
  • Add extra chili powder if you love a very spicy sandwich.
