Ingredients

  • 3 pounds of Granny Smith apples peeled and sliced.
  • 2 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice for tartness.
  • 1/2 cup of granulated sugar for the fruit.
  • 1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour for the juices.
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon for a warm spice.
  • 1 cup of old-fashioned rolled oats for crunch.
  • 1 cup of all-purpose flour for the topping.
  • 1 cup of packed light brown sugar.
  • 1/2 cup of cold unsalted butter cut small.
  • 1/2 teaspoon of kosher salt for the flavor.

Instructions

Preheating Your Oven

  • Start by heating your oven to 375 degrees now. Butter the bottom of your large glass baking dish.

Prepare the Fresh Apples

  • Peel, core, and slice all the tart green apples. Place them in a large bowl with lemon juice.

Season the Fruit Filling

  • Add the granulated sugar, flour, and half the cinnamon. Toss them well until every apple slice is coated.

Fill the Baking Dish

  • Pour the apple mixture into your buttered baking dish. Spread them out so they lay very flat today.

Mix the Crumble Topping

  • In a medium bowl, mix oats, flour, and brown sugar. Add the salt and the rest of the cinnamon.

Cut in the Butter

  • Add the cold butter pieces to the oat mixture. Use your fingers to make large, pea-sized crumbs.

Cover the Sliced Apples

  • Sprinkle the oat crumble evenly over the apple layer. Do not press it down into the fruit slices.

Bake Until Very Bubbly

  • Bake for 45 minutes until the topping is golden brown. The apple juices should be thick and bubbling high.

Notes

  • Use Granny Smith apples for a tart flavor profile.
  • Make sure the butter for topping is very cold.
  • Cut the apple slices into very even thin pieces.
  • Add chopped pecans or walnuts for an extra crunch.
  • Do not overmix the crumble or it gets tough.
  • Serve it warm for the best taste and smell.
  • Always peel the apples for a very smooth texture.
