Equipment

  • Large Mixing Bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Whisk or fork
  • Airtight glass jars or containersl
  • Small spray bottle with water
  • Rubber gloves (optiona)

Ingredients

  • Epsom salt: 2 cups
  • Baking soda: 1 cup
  • Citric acid: 1/2 cup
  • Sea salt: 1/2 cup
  • Essential oil: 15-20 drops
  • Food coloring: 3-5 drops optional
  • Dried flowers or herbs: 2 tablespoons optional

Instructions

  • Put Epsom salt in your large bowl.
  • Add baking soda and sea salt together.
  • Mix everything with your whisk or fork.
  • Make sure there are no lumps remaining.
  • This base creates the fizzing action later.
  • Slowly add citric acid to your mixture.
  • Stir it in very carefully and gently.
  • Citric acid makes the salts fizz nicely.
  • Don't skip this important ingredient at all.
  • Add your favorite essential oil drops now.
  • Lavender, eucalyptus, or peppermint work great here.
  • Mix it in really well throughout.
  • If you want color, add food coloring.
  • Use just a few drops at once.
  • Mix until the color spreads evenly everywhere.
  • Lightly spray water into the mixture once.
  • Mix quickly after each tiny spray only.
  • The mixture should feel like damp sand.
  • Don't add too much water at once.
  • Too much moisture starts the fizzing early.
  • Put your bath salts in glass jars.
  • Close the lids very tightly right away.
  • Store them in a cool, dry place.
  • They last for several months this way.

Notes

  • Work in a dry environment always today.
  • Humidity can start the fizzing reaction early.
  • Use fresh citric acid for better results.
  • Old citric acid doesn't fizz as well.
  • Mix colors and scents to create combinations.
  • Try rose with pink food coloring together.
  • Use 1/4 cup of salts per bath.
  • More isn't always better for your skin.
  • Package them in pretty jars for gifts.
  • Add a ribbon and handwritten label too.
